I received a wonderful fan letter recently that made everything all worthwhile:
Andrew,
I finished Bitter Things last night. Whew! Now I understand the title. I've never read a story where I was filled with as much angst, frustration, desolation, anger and pity for the main characters. I hope when you write its sequel that Michelle takes a little revenge on Jong because Lord knows I would! (Maybe a visit or 2 or 10 to that statue in the dungeon...but then again maybe she'd enjoy that...)
Even books where I've cried for the main characters didn't stay with me as much as yours has all day today. The only book I can say that came close to how yours made me feel was Acheron and the unbelievable misery he went through. Where did you get your muse for this stuff...do we need to worry about you?
Seriously though, I really enjoyed the fact that it wasn't a traditional HEA ending like I write. I'd like to think that Michelle brought a little humanity back to the keep since she had to sacrifice her own for the sake of the men she loves. (...and I say men because they all helped her search for Scott and in doing so touched her life in some way). In that way maybe they all can find a semblance of an HEA going forward. (All except Jong and Marta). You know, sometimes I can be a hard nosed witch with a capital B, but there's something about women like that...they just go against the grain, almost like they go against nature itself. They give new meaning to the words insidious and unnatural. When evil men in stories get their comupance its deserved and satisfying, but evil women...for me its like the whole universe needs to rally and punish.
Okay...enough...don't want to scare you too much.
Anyway, I enjoyed your book and I think it would definately appeal to a broader audience than just PNR readers.
