In the building in which I work in Manhattan, there's a security guard named Rodney Rivers who kids me about my alternate life as a vampire creator. He calls me the "slayah" to which I invariably reply, "don't be a slayah hater!"
He recently hit up the site, telling me he just might have to buy the book (what's all this "might" stuff?) and saw the blog about bad reviews. I told him to write a comment - but he said, why should he write a comment when he could just talk to me in the lobby.
I didn't have a good answer for that.
But about the content. He gave me some good advice, which can be summarized in three words: man up, already!
"You did the hard part. You got a book published. You got someone else to pay for your words, to spend time and effort putting together a good package and cover art and all that. Be proud of that! And forget that some people don't like what you do. Not everyone will. It's all part of getting there. And you, my friend, are on your way."
It's not often I can say I love my job, but when I get pep-talks like that, I don't mind going to work so much.
